The Cornwall Historical Society is pleased to announce the availability of a new subject guide that presents information on resources in our archives related to Cornwall’s Black and Natives communities. This guide is available via the link below.

In 2023, the Connecticut State Historical Records Advisory Board and Conservation ConneCTion embarked on a statewide survey to collect information on resources that document the experiences and representations of African Americans, Native Americans, and other people of color in Connecticut from the colonial times to the present. The purpose was to launch a subject guide dedicated to bringing resources that are normally inaccessible and undiscoverable together into one searchable database. The Cornwall Historical Society is pleased to announce that it was one of ten institutions in the state selected to participate in this important project. The Society received a $1,250 grant from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission to support a consultant’s expertise in creating the subject guide. Previous research had already identified materials in our archives that shed light on the lives of people of color in Cornwall; but as is the case for many archival items, these materials are scattered across multiple collections. With the help of an archivist, we were able to consolidate this information into a single resource that is searchable online.
